Truecaller app helps identify and block spam calls, now allowing users to create their own AI voice to answer calls. Truecaller cooperates with Microsoft Azure AI Speech for users to record their voices. The AI will learn from this recording to create an AI voice version that simulates the user.
Instead of using the default synthetic voice, the new feature makes answering calls with an AI assistant more familiar and comfortable. Truecaller’s AI assistant, currently only available in select countries, can classify incoming calls and reveal the reason for the call. Users can see the reason and choose how to respond, listen directly to the phone or ask an assistant to answer.
Previously, users could only choose one of the available voices. Truecaller says allowing voice recording is another step towards personalizing the service.
Microsoft Azure AI Speech, introduced at the Build conference, has a “personal voice” feature that allows voice recording and transcription. However, Microsoft notes that this feature is only available for specific scenarios such as virtual assistant use.
Microsoft says it automatically adds “imprints” to voices created using personal voice. Additionally, they also have a code of conduct that requires users to obtain full consent from the person being recorded and prohibits impersonation.
The effectiveness of AI voice compared to your own voice messages still needs to be further monitored.
