Meta, the group that owns Facebook and Instagram, just launched an independent fact-checking program for its newest social media app, Threads. This program marks a new step in Meta’s efforts to combat misinformation on its platform.
Previously, Threads used the information checking system of both Facebook and Instagram. However, with this new program, Meta will cooperate with independent fact-checking organizations to verify information on Threads. This cooperation will help ensure the accuracy and objectivity of information shared on the application.
According to Adam Mosseri, Instagram CEO, the platform has given fact-checking organizations the ability to review and flag misleading content on Threads. However, Mosseri did not reveal further details about when the program will specifically roll out or whether it will be limited to certain areas.
Meta is currently working with an outside organization to fact-check the Threads messaging app. However, detailed information about this partner has not yet been announced.
Threads’ implementation of this move is said to ensure transparency and accuracy of election-related information, contributing to creating a healthy election environment for the American people.
However, it should be noted that India is also in the midst of a general election, but Threads does not launch a fact-checking program in the country. The reason is said to be because the program’s implementation time is relatively short, making it difficult to implement effectively during the election period.
In December last year, Meta announced plans to bring a fact-checking program to messaging app Threads. According to information from Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, Meta is currently copying fact-checking review data from Facebook and Instagram to Threads. However, the company’s long-term goal is to create a system that allows independent fact-checking organizations to evaluate and classify misinformation directly on the Threads app.
