According to information shared on Reddit from a user who is about to receive delivery of the Tesla Model X Long Range version, it is possible that Tesla will stop supporting Steam on some new cars.
Tesla informed customers that it was “updating the gaming computer” in the Model X and “no longer has the ability to play Steam games.” Customers are required to confirm vehicle pickup despite the loss of this feature.
It is unclear whether other Tesla models are affected. Tesla also shows no signs of removing Steam from current users’ vehicles via software update. However, Tesla’s discontinuation of Steam support on some Model X models suggests this may be a common strategy.
For example, Steam is not available on Cybertruck. Tesla has also not spoken about bringing Steam to the best-selling Model Y and Model 3 models even though these cars have more powerful AMD Ryzen processors. Tesla even deleted some games like Sonic the Hedgehog.
In the past, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has promoted Steam as a selling point, emphasizing the power of the new GPU to play top games like Cyberpunk 2077. Steam is integrated into the 2022 facelift of the Model S and Model Musk has mentioned upgrades, but this service is not free.
There is speculation that Tesla may be returning to less powerful gaming hardware in the new Model S and X vehicles. Musk is busy cutting staff to turn Tesla into an “extremely tough” company. Tesla also scaled back plans for a new low-cost car and focused its efforts on building autonomous vehicles, which meant games like The Witcher were no longer a priority.
