Google used to provide the G Suite toolkit (now Google Workspace) for free but then required users to switch to a paid service package. However, a group of people who used free G Suite accounts a decade ago won a rare victory: retaining the right to use their free accounts. Thanks to a recent change, some people are even getting more free storage.
In 2020, when Google changed the name of G Suite to Workspace, the company announced that all users needed to switch to the new service plan, with storage calculated as a group instead of individually for each person. However, old free account users from about a decade ago protested, forcing Google to back down and allow them to continue using their free accounts – but only for personal use.

Now, some old account users have received more good news. Until June 2022, Google still allows old account users to purchase additional personal storage with a separate service plan. But over the past week, owners of those accounts started receiving emails from Google saying their hosting plans had been canceled. Although the most recent payment was refunded, the more positive thing was at the bottom of the email: “Even though the plan has been cancelled, your storage limit remains unchanged and you do not need to take any action.” any action.”
Google spokesperson Jenny Thomson confirmed to Techlade that these users will get to keep the extra storage and keep their old accounts: “Customers who receive this notification will keep the same amount of storage.” store and can continue to use the current account.” She also said this change also applies to people who have switched to a Workspace account but still have user-managed storage through Google Play – according to the support page, personal storage will not be added to the total. group capacity.
For now, it looks like those who have kept their free G Suite accounts for more than a decade will continue to enjoy it – even getting free extra storage in some cases. There’s no guarantee Google won’t change its policy in the future, but until then, this is still a pretty good deal.
