Scarlett Johansson accused OpenAI of asking her to voice ChatGPT, but when she refused, the company created a voice that sounded very similar to hers. Johansson said she had to hire a lawyer and send two letters to OpenAI to learn about how to create a voice like her named Sky.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman once asked Johansson to voice ChatGPT 4.0 and was a big fan of the movie “Her” in which she participated. After OpenAI introduced the new voice, Altman also posted a tweet with content reminiscent of this movie.

OpenAI confirmed that Sky’s voice is not Scarlett Johansson’s and was taken from another actor. However, out of respect for Johansson, they have temporarily stopped using this voice.
Johansson expressed surprise and anger at the similarity between her voice and Sky’s. She asked OpenAI to be transparent about this speech generation process. OpenAI later removed the Sky voice.
The case raises questions about the ethics of using celebrity voices in artificial intelligence, especially without their consent. This is also an issue related to personal copyright and there needs to be appropriate legal regulations to protect the rights of individuals.
