OpenAI is expanding access to its ChatGPT tool to schools and nonprofits. According to the announcement, OpenAI will provide a version of ChatGPT specifically for universities, with a discount program for non-profit organizations.
ChatGPT for Education (ChatGPT Edu) enables universities to “securely integrate artificial intelligence (AI) for students, faculty, researchers, and campus operations.” This tool is built on the more powerful GPT-4o platform, handling a variety of text, images and audio.
For example, schools can use ChatGPT Edu to review student resumes, write grant applications, and assist lecturers in marking assignments. The advantage of ChatGPT Edu is that it is highly secure, does not use training data for other OpenAI models, and has a reasonable price for universities.
In addition, OpenAI also introduced the OpenAI program for non-profit organizations, allowing them to access ChatGPT Team at a discounted price of only 20 USD per month for one user. Organizations can apply for the discount on OpenAI’s website. Larger organizations needing additional features and security can contact OpenAI for a 50% discount on ChatGPT Enterprise.
These announcements come after several weeks of trouble for OpenAI. Several key researchers resigned over safety concerns, while CEO Sam Altman was criticized for developing an AI voice identical to actress Scarlett Johansson even though she refused to participate in the project.
Former OpenAI board member Helen Toner, who called for CEO Altman to be fired last year, spoke out about him in an interview. Ms. Toner accused Altman of repeatedly providing inaccurate information about the company’s safety procedures and that there was evidence that Altman “lied and manipulated in various situations.”
