While artificial intelligence (AI) was the focus of the main presentation at Google I/O this year, there were a series of new feature updates revealed during developer sessions. For example, website 9to5Google discovered that Android 15 and Wear OS 5 will receive nifty improvements to password locks.

During a developer session on “Passkey and authentication best practices,” Google announced Android 15 will have a one-touch sign-in process. Instead of having to operate on two separate screens – one for account selection and another for fingerprint/face authentication, Google will merge them into a single screen.

As a result, you just need to use your face, fingerprint or any other screen unlock method to log in to your account. For developers, this feature will be automatically supported in new Credential Manager versions on Android 15 and above. Another update is the Autofill feature that will display results from Credential Manager in the Gboard keyboard. This includes passwords, password locks, and Sign in with Google.

Users will also have an easier time logging back into their favorite apps on their new device thanks to the new passcode lock “Recover” feature for phones and tablets. The application can save recovery keys to Credential Manager. This key is then stored locally on the device, and if cloud backup is enabled, it can be automatically transferred to the new device. In short, users won’t need to log in to each app manually.

Password Lock will also come to Wear OS 5 in a quarterly platform update. This allows you to use a passcode, password, or Sign in with Google directly from your wrist. Google says this capability will also work with third-party password managers, such as Dashlane. The Apple Watch already has some of these authentication features, so it’s great to see Google continuing to improve the experience for Android smartwatch users.
