Mrs. Melinda French Gates, co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with her ex-husband Bill Gates, will officially end her 27-year journey with the foundation in early June. After leaving, Ms. Gates will focus on charitable programs “for women and children” through a new organization.
The $12.5 billion for Ms. Gates’ charitable activities comes from the divorce agreement with Bill Gates, not from the funding of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Ms. Melinda French Gates shared that the decision to leave the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was not an easy choice. She expressed great pride in the foundation she and her husband founded together, as well as the organization’s extraordinary efforts to address global inequality.
In 2021, Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates announced their divorce but still agreed to continue collaborating at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. However, after two years, they decided to reconsider the deal.
According to Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman, if Ms. French Gates decides to leave the foundation, she will receive “personal resources from Bill for philanthropy” separate from the foundation’s funding.
The foundation’s executive leadership and board of directors will continue in their positions.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is famous for its extensive charitable activities, focusing on three key areas: poverty reduction, health and education. To realize this goal, the fund has sponsored many projects globally, notably an investment of 250 million USD in the Covid-19 vaccine development program.
