Apple’s two powerful desktop lines, Mac Studio and Mac Pro, will not be upgraded to the latest M4 chip until the middle of next year. This means both machines will still use the older M2 chip this year, unlike all other Macs except the MacBook Air. Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman shared this information with readers .
Throughout 2024, all Apple laptops (except the MacBook Air) will be equipped with the same M4 chip as the iPad Pro. Interestingly, this somewhat haphazard cycle of chip upgrades means that the iPad Pro is currently Apple’s best single-core performer – and it will continue to hold that position for another year or so compared to the Mac Studio and Mac Pro.
According to tests on Geekbench, iPad Pro outperforms Mac Studio’s M2 Ultra chip by 25% in single-core performance. Even the A17 Bionic chip on the iPhone 15 Pro is close to the M2 Ultra in terms of single-core CPU power. However, this is not too important because the M2 Ultra chip is still much more powerful when needing to use multiple processing cores at the same time.
The current Mac Studio and Mac Pro are still great computers with more RAM, more ports, and better cooling than the iPad Pro. They also run the more optimized macOS operating system for desktop computers. Advanced Mac users are used to waiting for upgrades. Still, many people will certainly be pleased when the M4 chip comes to the Mac Studio and Mac Pro next year.
