Using audio editing software, Kovacs discovered an encrypted QR code hidden in the audio. This QR code leads to a mysterious password-protected website. This password turned out to be a series of numbers printed on the album cover, above the head of a character named M8. This M8 character appears in several songs and also serves as a guide on the website.

This website is essentially an “alternate reality game” (ARG) similar to the games other bands like Nine Inch Nails have used to engage fans more deeply in their music. and the world of the band.

In this case, the game includes a website where the band uploads some unreleased songs, a “password” protected folder that leads to many other password protected files, many more mystery and more hidden “Easter eggs”, some of which remain unsolved and locked by unknown codes.

Kovacs’ discovery sparked a frantic hunt, where thousands of Bring Me The Horizon fans tried to uncover all the secrets hidden within the website. Days later, fans are still cracking the code, while the website’s creators come up with new challenges and puzzles to solve. Fans have a private Discord server with about 3,000 participants and a shared Google Doc, currently about 5,500 words long.

Predictably, on the first day fans found the website, some tried to hack it to gain an advantage in the game. This caused the developers to temporarily take down the website and replace it with a warning, asking fans not to perform actual hacking on hacking-themed websites.

M8, the album’s guide, released a statement warning fans about website hacking. “It seems that users have illegally hacked into the M8 server to decode hidden secrets. It is my responsibility to inform you that this behavior is both naughty and counterproductive! See, the whole point is The concept of this show is to uncover mysteries in a fun way, allowing everyone to enjoy the thrill of discovery. By beating the system and sharing secrets ahead of time, you’re ruining the fun for everyone!”

It’s unclear exactly what the developers meant by hacking into the “server” and who was responsible. Sony Music Entertainment, the band’s record label, did not respond to a request for comment.

Discord server owner, xDarkMagicianGirl, said: “There was an email address found after solving a puzzle on the website, we found it legally but when we sent an email to this address according to the website’s instructions, we I got a warning that we had hacked it and might be blacklisted if we tried again, we assumed it was an old bug from day one when the hackers took information from the website.”

xDarkMagicianGirl shared a copy of the email some people received following the hacking attempts:

“We detected that your recent visits to our website were unauthorized. While we understand your excitement, it’s time to pay attention to the consequences of this. If you continue to attempt unauthorized access to the system, you will be completely blocked from accessing any part of the website.

Let’s build a healthy environment together. Just a little patience will help everyone have an enjoyable experience. So let’s stop doing these actions and have fun!”.
