The latest Android update for Google TV brings a useful feature that makes it easier to find your misplaced remote. According to Android Authority, the beta of Android 14 for TV – announced at the Google I/O conference last week – contains information about the new “find remote” feature.
A text in the update says: “On your Google TV, there is a button that plays a sound on the remote for 30 seconds. This feature only works with certain Google TV remotes certain. To mute the sound, press any button on the remote control.”
AFTVNews also found a similar message on Walmart’s Onn Google TV 4K Pro streaming device, which was released earlier this month with a new remote find feature. This device also has a feature on/off button and a sound test button.
According to AFTVNews , the remote find feature is activated by pressing a button on the front of the Onn streaming device. The included remote will then beep and a small LED light will flash if it is within 30 feet of the streaming device.
The fact that support for finding remotes appears in Android 14 shows that this is not a Walmart-exclusive feature and will be available on other Google TV devices. Of course, older Google TV remotes that don’t have built-in speakers won’t be able to use this feature even when connected to a Google TV device updated to Android 14.
We’ve reached out to Google to clarify when the Android 14 for TV update will be available to users and which devices are supported.
