At WWDC 2024, Apple will officially introduce its artificial intelligence (AI) features. However, they may not be as ostentatious as what Google, Microsoft or OpenAI demonstrate. Instead, Apple plans to introduce basic AI features like converting voice recordings to text or automatically creating emojis, along with rumors of a partnership with OpenAI.
According to rumors, Apple will allow chatbots to integrate deeper into its operating system, and it seems that OpenAI will be the first partner with the ChatGPT product. However, Apple is still negotiating with Google to integrate Google’s Gemini, according to Mark Gurman. Additionally, Apple is also said to be in discussions with Anthropic (discussions started before OpenAI’s recent trouble with Scarlett Johansson).
Apple’s approach focuses on practicality. The company plans to announce AI-powered improvements to Spotlight search on devices, web search with Safari, as well as new features like notification summaries, “smart summaries” of web pages and messages, or text suggestions for emails and messages. Apple can also use AI to edit photos and create emojis based on the content of your messages – a feature that often causes problems for companies (think Meta’s AI sticker of Waluigi holding a gun or a Nazi photo). Google’s inappropriate racial diversity).
Apple could introduce a more natural voice for Siri based on its own large language models, as well as improve Siri functionality on Apple Watch. Apple devices will handle most of these tasks on the device itself, but for complex tasks they will turn to Apple’s M2 Ultra-based servers. Gurman writes that in general, devices “released within the last year or so” will get the most new on-device AI features.
Besides artificial intelligence improvements, iOS 18 promises to give iPhone users more personalization options for the home screen. The main highlight is the ability to change application icon color. Currently, this feature can only be done through the Shortcuts app but will become easier and more intuitive with iOS 18.
Next, rumors suggest that iOS 18 will break with the traditional home screen layout, allowing users the freedom to place app icons in any position they want. Instead of the current fixed row and column arrangement, users can be creative and personalize the interface according to their own preferences. Many believe this is just the beginning of allowing users the freedom to fully customize their home screen. In the future, we may see the emergence of unique and impressive home screen interfaces, expressing each user’s unique personality.
