Apple’s new iOS update fixes an error that caused deleted sensitive photos to reappear

Last week, the iOS 17.5 update unexpectedly caused a serious error. Many iPhone and iPad users report that deleted photos strangely reappear. Apple has yet to officially comment on the issue, but on Monday it rolled out iOS and iPadOS 17.5.1 updates to fix the problem.

According to the update notes, this patch “fixes a rare bug that caused database-corrupted photos to reappear in the Photo Library even after deletion.”

In some cases, supposedly deleted photos show up at the top of the user’s “recent photos” section, including sensitive photos. Some users even reported old photos reappearing on an iPad that was restored to factory settings and sold to someone else.

Users should update to the latest version immediately. However, it is currently unclear how many users are affected, what types of photos are likely to reappear, or how sold devices will be handled.
