Ireland’s Data Protection Authority confirmed it is investigating Dell’s data breach

A leading European privacy watchdog is investigating following the leak of Dell customers’ personal information. Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) confirmed to Techlade that it had received a “breach notice in this regard” – referring to Dell – and was “under assessment”.

Dell also confirmed to Techlade that it has “notified regulators and will continue to cooperate with them as necessary.”

Previously, Dell sent emails to customers notifying them of data theft. The theft included customers’ names, addresses and order information. Although customers’ home addresses were stolen, Dell said it believes “there is no significant risk to our customers due to the type of information involved.”

Techlade exclusively reported that the same attacker obtained additional customer data from another Dell portal . Data from this second breach included Dell customers’ names, phone numbers, and email addresses.

In both cases, the attacker – identified only as Menelik – said he found vulnerabilities in two different Dell portals and stole customer data.

Ireland has been Europe’s most active data protection watchdog in recent years, as many major technology companies have their European headquarters in Ireland, including Dell. The DPC has enforced EU-wide data protection and privacy regulation, known as GDPR, on several companies, including TikTok, which was fined $379 million for mishandling children’s data, and Meta , was fined $1.3 billion for violating regulations on transferring users’ personal data to the United States. Companies can be fined up to 4% of their global turnover for GDPR violations.
