Last week, The Flappy Bird Foundation officially launched a new game called Flappy Bird, marking the return of an icon in the mobile gaming world. However, surprisingly, the creator of the once-famous Flappy Bird, Mr. Nguyen Ha Dong, confirmed that this was not his product and he had no involvement in this project.
This morning, after a long period of silence since 2017, Nguyen Dong suddenly shared on social network X that he did not “sell anything”. This comes after The Flappy Bird Foundation announced last week that they had purchased all intellectual property rights to the game Flappy Bird from another company. However, the latest information from Nguyen shows that he did not enter into any agreement with the organization.
No, I have no related with their game. I did not sell anything.
I also don't support crypto.— Dong Nguyen (@dongatory) September 15, 2024
Gametech officially filed a complaint against Nguyen Ha Dong’s ownership of the Flappy Bird trademark in 2023, according to information from user X Samperson. Notably, this complaint came nearly 10 years after Nguyen Ha Dong decided to stop developing and remove the popular game from app stores. Due to the lack of activity related to the Flappy Bird trademark for a long time, the US Intellectual Property Office made an official decision in January, confirming that Nguyen Ha Dong’s trademark had been canceled, meaning that he no longer owned the rights to the game.
While the Flappy Bird Foundation did not explicitly mention Nguyen’s involvement in the announcement, it is clear that they are tapping into nostalgia to promote the game. More than half of the first trailer is devoted to recalling the height of Flappy Bird and the regret of its sudden “disappearance” in 2013, before stating that “Flappy Bird will be back in 2024.”
As for the cryptocurrency aspect of the Flappy Bird relaunch, security researcher Varun Biniwale discovered some interesting hidden pages. One of them, which has since been deleted but is still available, shows that Flappy Bird will be connected to a cryptocurrency system called Solana. This means that the game will enter a new world where players can not only play the game but also participate in activities such as content creation, trading, and even investing.
Flappy Bird is coming back to both iOS and Android. However, don’t expect to experience the same familiar feeling as the old version. According to the information available, the original game will not be restored.
